When you support us, you uplift individuals and communities

Our community bakery initiative is one of our key steps toward building sustainable local businesses. In 2020, we opened our first community bakery with the vision of producing high-quality, healthy bread while keeping it affordable and accessible for the local community. The bakery has been very successful and now serves as a pilot project for future bakeries that we hope to establish in other communities.

The bakery primarily produces fresh bread rolls along with a growing range of baked goods, including banana breads, cookies, cinnamon buns, and donuts, as we continue to experiment and expand our offering.

We are proud to use stone-ground organic flour produced in South Africa, ensuring both quality and support for local producers.

As part of our commitment to education and skills development, two team members have completed SETA-accredited baking training, strengthening the professional skills within the bakery. This small enterprise currently provides employment for two people and continues to grow as demand increases.

While People of Love is largely volunteer-driven, our initiatives are designed to create meaningful employment opportunities for community members. In the early stages of each project, individuals work alongside People of Love, gaining skills and experience with the long-term intention of growing these initiatives into sustainable community enterprises wherever possible.

Milestones

April 2020
During lockdown, Wilja Reitz from Ouland Café Royal generously supported our mobile soup kitchen by baking fresh bread rolls for the community. In total, she baked more than 5,000 rolls, helping ensure that many families received nourishing meals during a very challenging time.

Thanks to the generous support of Greg’s Bakery, we were able to open our first community bakery in Kranshoek. Baking up to 500 rolls a day, the bakery helped supply several soup kitchens in the Kranshoek community, providing fresh bread and strengthening our local food support network.

Brenda Kietas and Aisha Paulse took an important step in their journey by joining a SETA-accredited baking course, successfully completing the training and receiving their certification. This milestone strengthened their skills and helped build the foundation for our growing community bakery initiative.

Our pancakes soon became our signature fundraising treat, bringing smiles wherever we set up our stall. From Pick n Pay to the Halloween Market and horse riding competitions, these simple pancakes helped us raise funds, share our story, and connect with the wider community.
